Betsey Ellis '17 presents senior research at American Academy of the Advancement of Science

Betsey Ellis '17 presented her senior research project from last year to the American Academy of the Advancement of Science and the American Junior Academy of Science this month in Austin, TX.

CPA science instructors Katie Decker and Amber Romaine traveled to Austin to watch Betsey present. Her research poster is on display in the main lobby of the upper school. Betsey is a first-year student at Vanderbilt University, and she is studying the affects of overdosing on over-the-counter medications (like Advil and Benadryl) on the phenotypic expression of fruit flies.

"Betsey has a natural analytical ability and a very scientific mind. This research project was completely her idea, a product of her curiosity to know more about gene mutation and how chemical exposure affects it. She came up with the problem, developed the procedure to test it, carried out the experiment, and analyzed the data all on her own as an upper school senior. It is incredible that she was given the opportunity to present to AAAS/AJAS, speaking in front of hundreds of scientests from across the nation. Only two students in the state are invited to this conference. We could not be more proud of her," explained Instructor of US Chemistry Katie Decker.
