Eighth grade students visit assisted living homes across Nashville

Eighth Grade Service Day took middle school students to assisted living homes and senior recreation facilities across the city of Nashville last week.
As part of CPA middle school's focus on intentionality and connection skills, this day was dedicated to students learning about those in older generations. Students visited NHC Bellevue Center, Fifty Forward, Reddick Senior Living, Heritage at Brentwood, Williamson County Senior Enrichment Center, Heritage at Brentwood, NHC Cool Springs, Windland South, Knowles Assisted Living, The Blakeford, Health Center at Richland Place, and Mary Queen of Angels.

Preparing interview questions beforehand, students met with senior residents to interview them on their early years and current perspectives on life, culture, and relationships. This exercise is designed to expand students' outlook, teach listening skills, and respect the stories of elders.

"The students were engaging and loving toward the residents at the Knowles Center. They did not shy away, but listened extremely well as they thoughtfully asked questions about each individual's life. It was a day about others, and the students came away wiser," commented MS teacher Bruce Francis.
