Media arts students explore film industry in Los Angeles
CPA media arts students recently traveled to Los Angeles to explore the film and entertainment industry, meet industry professionals, connect with CPA media arts alumni in collegiate arts programs, and see the sights.
The trip's itinerary included tours of Warner Brothers Studios, Sony Studios, and Universal Studios, as well as tours of the Dodge College of Film & Media Arts located on the campus of Chapman University, and the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts.
Students also participated as the live studio audience for the live taping of America's Funniest Home Videos, which will air on broadcast television on Sunday, March 25. They also met with a special guest, Bob Smiley, who is a Christian television writer in the entertainment industry. The trip offered a wide array of educational and cultural experience.
Instructor of Media Arts Michael Ellson reflects on the trip:
"In Media Arts, I always say we are equipping students to not only evaluate and critically respond to media, which students are absorbing constantly, but also to create and produce positive, relevant, and engaging work. In media arts classes, students are constantly challenged to create effective and sustainable solutions for problems that arise "in the moment" during the production process. Thus, my favorite experience from the travel study was participating in the live taping of America's Funniest Home Videos, because students had the opportunity to see entertainment professionals work as a team to problem solve and create each moment/scene on screen.
Observing students watch the creative process at work was breathtaking. Afterwords I had the opportunity to hear students' reflections on the experience, and I was so pleased to hear them discuss the meaning of the episode and the effect it had on them as an audience. I think that was the best part for me, watching students eyes being opened to the culture."
