Themed activities and campus-wide viewing for rare solar eclipse
Students across the Academy experienced Monday's rare solar eclipse with a day of special learning opportunities, engaging dialogue, lesson planning, and a K-12 viewing in the Den! The rarity of a total solar eclipse paired with Nashville's advantageous location in the path of totality, led faculty to plan for a campus-wide curricular experience surrounding the event.
Even though preschoolers did not attend the viewing for safety reasons, they had their own special screening of CPA middle schooler Tiger Dulaney's stop-motion animation film of an ancient eclipse myth. This was followed by a short discussion explaining the solar eclipse and it's brief but beautiful effects in nature.
Lower school students had an entire day of eclipse-themed activities. Mr. Bond and the Science Guys led lessons and interactive experiments with students grades K-5 including moon buggy races in a solar-powered vehicle, rocket launches explaining the concepts of propulsion and space exploration, an interactive show that explained the science of how and why the eclipse happened that day, and a solar glasses construction station.
Middle and upper school students enjoyed in-depth reviews of the science behind the eclipse as well as fun, themed snacks. When the time came for students, faculty, and staff to gather in the Den for the viewing, excitement built as classic songs like Total Eclipse of the Heart, Here Comes the Sun, and Rocket Man played from the football press box. Narrated by Lower School STEAM Lab Instructor Ian Mullins-Zugelder, the presentation included minute-by-minute dictation of the unique displays of light and shadows. The brief moments of totality were breathtaking.
As Head of School Nate Morrow stated, "the eclipse did not pause education, it enhanced it!"
