High school transforms elementary school into A Charlie Brown Christmas wonderland as surprise for students

Christmas time usually means decked halls around campus at CPA, but this year’s decorations took on new life thanks to high school students’ idea to serve the elementary school with a special surprise. The annual High School Hall Decorating Competition usually takes over the high school building. All four houses competed against one another with ornate, themed décor. This year, students decided instead of working on their own hallways, they’d spread Christmas cheer in the elementary school by transforming their building into A Charlie Brown Christmas wonderland. Visual art students took the lead in designing the vision, while others gathered materials, organized teams, and coordinated set up.
“We decided instead of competing against each other this year, we’d all come together to serve the elementary school. We all had different jobs on the project and only two days to set it up. It was a lot of work but so much fun to see it all come together,” said junior Shaoey Chapman.

This project was kept secret in hopes of surprising ES students. Working through the weekend to set it up, students finished decorating in time for Monday morning carpool. Elementary school students reveled in the awe and excitement of hundreds of lights, nearly a dozen trees, giant murals of scenes from the classic movie, and life-size characters like Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, and of course, Charlie Brown!

“My students really wanted to do A Charlie Brown Christmas since it was the favorite Christmas movie of the late, beloved Ben Ellis. It was a beautiful finished product, and I’m so proud of students in all four houses for working hard over their weekend to pull it off. The joy of the surprise was evident in each child’s face as they entered the building,” said Instructor of HS Chemistry Katie Parks.
