“But unless we are creators we are not fully alive. What do I mean by creators? Not only artists, whose acts of creation are the obvious ones of working with paint or clay or words. Creativity is a way of living life…”

-Madeleine L’Engle

The arts at CPA are viewed as an integral facet of a sound education. The fine arts department seeks to provide for all students, a body of significant meaningful experiences to explore the arts in transformative ways. This goal allows students to engage in their unique gifts and engage in the enrichment the arts bring to life.

Arts and Life

The first thing we know about God is He is creative. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) The CPA Arts is rooted in that tenet; that made in His image, every student is creative. Consequently CPA’s arts educational strategy is shaped by a strenuous academic approach through multiple course offerings combined with vibrant hands-on artistic work in productions, events, honor societies and clubs. From preschool through upper school graduation, the arts faculty at CPA educates, mentors and encourages students. The program provides opportunities to serve and to lead, and affords an environment for students to connect and be known as they journey through the discovery of the life for which they are gifted and called. The goal is clear --- to provide engaging opportunities for students to discover more of their innate abilities, to hone them, and to be able to apply them in diverse ways in the larger context of life.

Arts and Learning

Learning experiences in the arts contributes to the larger scope of learning in all subjects. For over twenty years multiple independent studies have documented the correlation between increased years of study in the arts and achievement on standardized tests. Arts learning enhances curricular achievement and social development in students of all ages. As well, arts learning heightens confidence, problem solving, perseverance, focus, non-verbal communication, the ability to receive constructive feedback, collaboration, innovation, dedication, and accountability. Add to that the full list the 21st century skills and the arts moves beyond a credit on a transcript, an entertaining school activity, or preparation for future study and career, but becomes a valuable tool for all of learning through all of life.

Arts and Culture

What comes to mind when you hear “art”?  Starry Night by Van Gogh? Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa?  Handel’s Messiah or the Beatles, Let it Be?  Or does the term “art” have a broader definition for you? How about the music jingle from the radio ad you can’t get out of your head, the fashion of the day, or the copy on the cereal box at breakfast?  The arts touch everything in our culture today.  Music, dance, media arts, visual arts, and theatre are employed to exert a powerful influence over society.  CPA Arts encourages students to excel for an audience of One ---- to seek to glorify God and serve the audience, not self.  And in the long term it seeks to prepare students to understand the powerful messages the arts sends out into the world, so that in future years as consumers, supporters, or creators  they will be salt and light in the culture --- preserving it, giving it flavor, illuminating the way.

Accomplishments of CPA Alumni beyond university and conservatory successes, include national and international theatre and music performances and tours, recording session work, movies, television appearances, Broadway shows, Emmy and Dove Awards, and work in the educational and ministry realms.
