CPA Basketball honors VG Head Coach Becky Legate for over 500 wins

CPA Basketball honored the legacy of Varsity Girls Head Coach Becky Legate at last week's Senior Night win over Battle Ground Academy (49-47). Legate has been a head coach for 23 years, coaching nearly 700 games.
The win over BGA marked number 513 for Legate, a biproduct of her philosophy centering on the development of talent, character, and focus in young athletes. The head coach was honored after the senior night win with a pair of golden Chuck Taylor shoes (her favorite) and some special words from the administration and her team.

We sat down with Coach Legate for a short Q&A:

Q: What's one item you cannot coach without?
A: It's not an item, but I cannot coach a game without my assistant coaches. They are at the foundation of this program, and they keep it all together! These wins are really theirs, not mine.
Q: What is something you do at every practice/game?
A: We pray at every event, sometimes several times at a game or practice. We pray at the beginning. We pray at the end. We pray before the bus pulls out, and we never leave an event without prayer. It's what binds us, focuses us, reminds us of why we are here and who we belong to.

Q: What is your favorite coaching quote?
A: “Good teams become great ones when the members trust each other enough to surrender the ‘me’ for the ‘we’” – Phil Jackson

Q: Describe your overall coaching philorsophy in three words:
A: Believe, Love, Together
Q: Who is your number one fan?
A: My family...they are why I coach, and I couldn't have coached this many years without their love and support.
Q: What do you like to do after a game?
A: Check in with my family and then get something good to eat!
Q: Any advice for a first-year coach?
A: Plays and drills are great, but the most important thing in coaching is building a great relationship with your players. Like the old saying, "your players don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." Building a great relationship with your players is the key to getting them to have confidence in themselves, and it will enable them to become better players than they ever imagined.
Legate currently holds 514 career wins after the team defeated Ezell Harding in the District Quarterfinals this week. They take on Providence Christian in the Semifinals on Friday, Feb. 9, at MTCS, at 4 p.m.
