CPA Media Arts and Journalism programs take first place in the state at THSPA awards

Media Arts and Journalism students recently attended Tennessee High School Press Association (THSPA) Awards Day, winning Best Overall News Studio/Station and Best Overall Yearbook in the state. THSPA represents hundreds of student journalism and media staffs from across Tennessee. CPA swept first place in eight other categories, including Senior Madelyn Bomar as Student Journalist of the Year, Best Newscast, Best Yearbook Copy, and Best Yearbook Design.
This is the 13th consecutive year that CPA’s Lion’s Roar, has won Best Overall Yearbook in the state, speaking volumes of Journalism instructor Heather Nagel’s 2015 staff.
“Yearbook truly is a student-run operation. From the Editor-in-Chief, to the Head Designer and Head Photographer, these students run the staff like a newsroom, carrying out their own processes towards a final product,” explains Nagel.
Media Arts students took home Best Overall News Studio/Station in addition to seven other state awards for broadcast segments, individual newscasts, and multimedia presentations.
“This year, in addition to being supported by their CPA peers, each of these production teams have been honored by the state of Tennessee for their work as young writers, directors, cinematographers, and visual storytellers,” says Director of Media Arts Michael Ellson. “I am extremely proud of each of these production teams, not only because of the work they have produced but also because of their personal growth during the process.”
