TICE Law & Advocacy Center hosts TN Supreme Court Justice Sarah Campbell

TICE Law & Advocacy students welcomed Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sarah Campbell to speak about her journey to the bench, sharing lessons on the state and federal court systems and the importance of the Judicial oath she took. Justice Campbell clearly outlined the differences between State and Federal court systems, explaining the roles of each and how cases transition between them. The American court system is structured with checks and balances to safeguard citizens' individual rights.

Students learned the differences between trial courts and appellate litigation and how the portrayal of lawyers in movies and television isn’t an accurate portrayal of Appellate Courts. Campbell was drawn to the Appellate Court because of the importance of upholding legal precedent. As a student, she enjoyed critical thinking and analysis. These are the skills she uses every day in the Appellate Court to find the root meaning of laws and how they translate to various case decisions.

“The role of the court in our society is to ensure that democracy and individual liberty can flourish,” Campbell told the students. Our court system protects what is written in the Constitution and helps people resolve conflicts peacefully. When asked why she went into law, she replied that she “felt like the legal system had a critical part to play in society.” She explained that every case is different and allows her to learn and develop as a professional. She is thankful to God for opening doors in her pathway that have brought her to the Tennessee Supreme Court. Justice Campbell inspired aspiring law students by highlighting the societal impact of a legal career and the diverse paths a legal degree can offer. It was an honor to have Justice Campbell speak at CPA.
