As the sixth graders enter Middle School, their science curriculum moves to the lab. Before the fun and educational experiments can start, safety must be learned. Students begin the year with a safety course in the science lab learning rules such as: Protect eyes, face, hands and body by wearing proper clothing and use protective equipment like gloves and goggles when necessary; know the location of emergency and first aid equipment in the lab; notify the teacher immediately of any accident or emergency; never work alone in the lab; no snacks are permitted in the lab. After these lessons are drilled and the sixth graders have learned the basics of being in the lab, the experiments can begin, unlocking the learning that will take them through high school and perhaps peak the interest of a budding scientist.
