Remembering September 11

On September 11, students in Grades 6–12 gathered in the Den for a fitness class grounded in remembrance. Before stepping onto the bleachers, each class watched a short video outlining the events of September 11, 2001. Students were then handed a laminated card with a name, photograph, and personal story, an individual survivor, a fallen first responder, a victim, a witness, or a service member inspired to enlist in the aftermath.

Holding those cards in hand, students set out to run 2,071 stadium stairs, matching the physical ascent made by emergency personnel in the World Trade Center towers.

The event grew out of a conversation during summer professional development. Middle school history teachers met with Kenny Roeten, the Athletic Director at Page High School, and also a wounded veteran, and discussed a simple reality: because today's students were born years after 2001, 9/11 is history rather than memory. Recognizing that history requires intentional teaching to be remembered, Patrick Jordan, Assistant Head of the Middle School, partnered with the athletics team, Austin Bolen and Anna Birdwell, to design an active, tangible memorial.

The goal is to encourage students to look outside themselves and reflect on sacrifice, service, and civic duty. As the final flights were completed, the laminated cards remained with the students – serving as a quiet reminder of the stories carried forward.
