Most famously known for her portrayal of Haley James Scott on the television drama One Tree Hill, Bethany Joy Lenz is an American actress, filmmaker, singer, and songwriter. Before One Tree Hill, she starred as Michelle Bauer Santos on the CBS Daytime soap opera Guiding Light. In 2002, Lenz formed a band with her lifelong friend and in 2012, continued her career as a solo artist.
Arts Director Jake Speck hosted a Q&A session with Lenz for The Center of Production + Performance students in the Upper School. Lenz spoke about all aspects of the business and encouraged students to first and foremost “know who you are and whose you are” above anything else.
Lenz discussed in-depth her experiences on One Tree Hill and how her unique story in the industry has shaped her. Unlike many other actors and actresses, Lenz didn’t face consistent rejection at the beginning of her career. In contrast, she faced deeper challenges after her role in One Tree Hill. However, during that time, Lenz found joy in what the Lord had called her to, even if that didn't look like what she'd imagined. Even amidst trials, she sought to use every opportunity as work unto the Lord, sharing the gospel, praying for others, and inviting the Holy Spirit into every encounter.
After students asked questions, Lenz spent time with them one-on-one, taking photographs and answering any other questions. Her genuine, intentional, and inspirational messages left a lasting impression on students, especially those who are interested in pursuing a career in acting.
On March 8, Production + Performance students will hear from Angela Kahle, a former Rockette and Broadway performer. For more information about The Institute of Cultural Engagement (TICE), visit cpalions.org.
