From the Headmaster: The Gift of May Drummond

staff - Richard Anderson

“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1) Come to find out…this stuff really works!

“All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” (Psalm 139:16)

“Then the King will say…‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.’” (Matthew 25:34)

It is a tale of two women...The wrath of one was turned away by a soft answer; the other would never have dreamed of speaking grievous words which stir up anger in the first place. Last week I chronicled our journey with a hateful vendor who exasperated my sister regarding our little Mama’s business affairs, and who wasn’t exactly sea shells and balloons in her dealings with me. But she has a “story.” I am not going to devote much space to her, except to say: I ended well with her. I tried kindness (per Proverbs 15:1), and it worked. She still couldn’t see that she had any fault in the matter. And you know what? Who cares!

I compare her with our dear May Drummond, who went Home to be with the Lord on Sunday afternoon. May is the “George Washington” of CPA. As the FIRST employee in 1985, she not only was going to teach Kindergarten, she was going to serve as interim Head-of-School until the Academy could get up and running. May had a heart for the Gospel…for children…for missions (along with hubby Don). She was involved for many years with Child Evangelism Fellowship. She instituted the legendary Good News Clubs at CPC. Many CPA students (and parents) learned how to share their faith in Christ as a result of this evangelistic endeavor.

May waged a courageous battle against cancer for many years. Don was right by her side the whole way, as he had been for decades. To see and speak with either of them, you would never have known that anything was the matter; YOU came away a better person.

Historical Photos_RBA + Teachers

I am looking at a picture on my bookshelf from July 1985. A young red-bearded headmaster—and CPA’s first faculty—is standing outside of a PCA church in Pensacola. May is holding her Bible; that is as it should be. We all rode on May’s coattails in those early days, beneficiaries of her great wisdom…of her warm, loving spirit. A generation of Kindergarten students—and 1,086 graduates—owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to May. A life well-lived…“Well done, thou good and faithful servant…enter in to the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.”

Soli Deo Gloria. To God Alone be the Glory for the life of May Terry Drummond.

Faculty and Staff Treated To "Souper Bowl" Friday

Parent Student Fellowship (PSF) hosted a special "Souper Bowl" lunch for CPA faculty and staff Friday, Feb. 3. PSF held the event to say "thank you" to those who dedicate themselves day-in and day-out at the Academy. Members of the faculty flocked to the various stations on campus to get their delicious portion of homemade soup provided by parent volunteers. Thank you to Courtney Conner and an army of great cooks for blessing our faculty and staff in such a kind and tasty manner.

Parent Opportunity: Learning About Learning

Live Scribes Posted

In case you missed this morning's Learning About Learning session, please visit THIS LINK to view and listen to the discussion.

Next Session Friday, Feb. 10

Join us for Learning About Learning, a series of information-packed discussions with Katherine Koonce, Academic Dean, exploring the amazing and sometimes complicated process of learning, and how our children’s learning affects our parenting. The series, which has an elementary and middle school parenting focus, includes seven sessions, each meeting on Friday morning in the Chapel. Join us for coffee at 7:45 a.m. All sessions, which are open to the community, will begin promptly at 8 a.m. and will conclude approximately at 9 a.m.

We hope to see you next Friday, when we explore the topic Attention, Concentration and Mental Effort: Paying Attention to What’s Important. Distractions are everywhere. In our media-centered culture, children are literally bombarded with interesting and fun things to look at, listen to and do. Most children can focus appropriately; the problem is that they often focus on the wrong things, or they begin to pay attention and then have trouble maintaining their focus or mental energy, especially if the activity does not interest them. Since attention is central to the learning process, we are wise to help our children develop and strengthen these crucial skills that will allow them to be lifelong learners. In this session, we’ll get specific about how to strengthen and lengthen our children’s attention skills.

Pause to Pray Verse for Monday, Feb. 6

At noon each Monday, we encourage the CPA community to Pause to Pray. Monday's verse is from Romans 8:35-39:

"Do not let anything separate (child's name) from your love. When trouble, hardship, persecution, danger, or any need arises, let (child's name) remember that we are "more than conquerors," and that nothing can separate him/her from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
