From the Headmaster: In the Words of Johnny Cash...

“Some of you think that Johnny Cash is sitting on the fence. I’m here tonight to tell you that Johnny Cash is on the same side of the fence as Jesus Christ.” (The late Johnny Cash, speaking at a long-ago Billy Graham Crusade)
Sixty years ago this week, Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne upon the death of her father, King George VI (The King’s Speech) on February 6, 1952. In the audience at her coronation on June 2, 1953, was a 21-year-old U.S. Airman named John R. Cash. One of the last songs Johnny Cash wrote/recorded before his death (September 12, 2003) was “The Man Comes Around”. It is about the Second Coming of Christ. His beloved June Carter Cash had just preceded Johnny in death (May 15, 2003), and Johnny believed in the Resurrection.
Johnny utilized many Biblical allusions in this song…his voice weak and raspy, his body frail, his hair white like an Old Testament prophet. One line in particular is rather unique. Johnny had performed in London some years earlier. He wrote that Queen Elizabeth appeared to him in a dream and said, “Johnny Cash, you’re a thorn bush in a whirlwind.” Johnny later found that same reference in the Book of Job. It inspired him to write thirty-three verses of what would become “The Man Comes Around”. To see the lyrics, please click HERE.
There are fourteen Biblical references in the words Johnny penned. I never laid eyes on Johnny Cash, though I have always been a big fan. I knew his mother, Carrie, when I taught school in Hendersonville; we just called her “Mama Cash.” Mama impacted Johnny and his six siblings for the Gospel…as did his dear June Bug. Today, he, June, and Mama Cash are in Alpha and Omega’s kingdom come. We will be, too…when the man comes around. Soli Deo Gloria for the Man who bought us back. – Richard B. Anderson

English Tea for Sixth Graders? By Jove!
Downton Abbey has nothing on the home of CPA mom and PSF President Lorianne Merritt when it comes to serving delightful English tea. All of CPA's sixth graders experienced a British tradition on Thursday, Feb. 9, when they took turns visiting the Merritt home in Devonshire to partake of tea, scones and other treats, while learning about royalty and the history of the Crown. Special thanks to all of the volunteers (shown in fourth photo below with special guest Headmaster Richard B. Anderson) who made the day so memorable for our students.

Next Session Friday, Feb. 17
Join us for Learning About Learning, a series of information-packed discussions with Katherine Koonce, Academic Dean, exploring the amazing and sometimes complicated process of learning, and how our children’s learning affects our parenting. The series, which has an elementary and middle school parenting focus, includes seven sessions, each meeting on Friday morning in the Chapel. Join us for coffee at 7:45 a.m. All sessions, which are open to the community, will begin promptly at 8 a.m. and will conclude approximately at 9 a.m.
We hope to see you next Friday, when we explore the topic Remembering to Learn and Learning to Remember: Memory, Organization and Study Skills. A child’s brain is a sponge, soaking up vast amounts of information, knowledge and memories. Memory is one of the brain’s primary functions and is intricately connected with other diverse functions such as language, motor control, spatial ordering, social thinking and attention. We hear often of short-term and long-term memory, but we seldom hear of a vastly important component in the memory system called active working memory—the area between short- and long-term memory where the many components of any activity are held in place long enough to complete that activity. When we help our children improve this aspect of their memory system, we give them the tools to work more effectively, maintain better organization, and be more aware of themselves as learners.

City Paper Spotlights CPA Teams
It's always good to see longtime Nashville sportswriter Harold Huggins on our campus. After his visit to last Friday's home basketball games vs. Maplewood, Harold wrote a nice article in the Nashville City Paper about our girls' and boys' teams, shining kind light on our coaches and on several individual players. To read the article, go HERE.
