“Once upon a time...” while not the actual opening line, it might as well be in this modern day fairytale. Near the docks of a New England village, one spring when the fair has come to town this musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, begins. In Act I, “June is Bustin’ Out All Over” when we meet the characters: Carrie the millworker, Aunt Nettie who runs the spa by the ocean, Mrs. Mullins the carousel owner, Mr. Bascombe the richest man in town, Enoch Snow the upright-almost-uptight suitor, Jigger the con man—all playing parts in the story of Julie and Billy—ill-matched, in love, and mounting impossible odds in this life and the next. For Billy’s upbringing has taught him that either charm and manipulation or anger and lashing out are the means to get by in this world. While Julie’s ways are trust and love. The carousel turns, the sailors dance (“Blow High, Blow Low”), a clambake is held and tragedy (as it always must) enters this fairytale. Then comes Act II, with two new characters: the Heavenly Friend and the Starkeeper. Billy it seems can’t even enter Heaven by the back gate until he returns to life and does someone some good. Minutes in heaven are years on earth, and when Billy returns he finds a new character he has never met…his daughter…someone who needs help only he can give. A story of hope, hardship, love, redemption and forgiveness, this classic American musical is one that is still relevant today, reminding us “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Carousel… A fairytale that tells the truth.
